A former Northern California police commander has pleaded guilty to possession of stolen guns.

Federal prosecutors announced Tuesday that John Nyunt admitted to duping a police academy into giving him more than two dozen guns. The academy was closing in 2009 and thought it was donating the guns to the Pacific Grove Police Department where Nyunt served as commander.

The department never wanted the guns and Nyunt kept them for himself. He sold most of them and gave others away.

Nyunt will be sentenced April 7 at the same time he is scheduled to be sentenced for a separate federal criminal case. Nyunt pleaded guilty in May to federal charges of extortion and wire fraud for a tangled crime that involved sharing a password to a law enforcement database.
