An Ohio woman was drunk when she sped away from police in an SUV that later crashed and flipped with five children inside, ejecting a 2-year-old boy, authorities said Thursday.
Lashawna Taylor, 33, refused to pull over when a police officer tried to stop her SUV late Wednesday, Akron police Lt. Rick Edwards said. She fled at a high rate of speed, running stop signs and red lights, but officers stopped the chase after seeing she had children with her.
The Buick Rendezvous eventually went out of control, striking a snowbank and two wooden poles before hitting a fence post and overturning. The 2-year-old boy suffered a broken leg, Edwards said. His condition wasn’t available Thursday.
The other children, all girls, weren’t seriously injured but were taken to a hospital for treatment. Two of them were 9, and the others were 6 and 11. Another woman in the car also was taken for treatment.
Taylor is the mother of four of the children, police said. No one inside the SUV was wearing a seat belt, police said.
Taylor was charged with felony child endangering, impaired driving, fleeing police, failure to control and driving on a suspended license. She was being held with a $150,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court again Friday morning, at which time an attorney is likely to be appointed. Court records do not list one for her.
Police said she admitted drinking before the crash.
