Whether he knew his victims were elderly or not, it soon became clear that a septuagenarian in Michigan was anything but easy prey for one armed robber. According to a Detroit Free Press report, the 74-year-old homeowner and his wife awoke Thursday morning as a man was entering their Southgate home through a rear window.

Shortly thereafter, the couple faced the intruder directly as he aimed his firearm at them.

Southgate Public Safety Director Thomas Coombs explained that the homeowner was on his way to phone authorities when the intruder trained his gun at him.

“That was the confrontation that caused everything to happen,” Coombs explained. “I don’t believe there were any words exchanged.”

At that point, the resident was able to pull out his own gun and open fire on the suspect, killing him.

Southgate Police Chief Jeff Smith confirmed no one was arrested, explaining the homeowner was legally in possession of the gun he used.

Though he acknowledged the case is “still an open investigation,” he suggested the resident will likely not face any charges.

Coombs elaborated on the process, noting that the county prosecutor will ultimately decide whether charges are warranted.

“Based on the information we know presently,” he said, “they would find it was a justified shooting. He was protecting his life.”

Some reports indicate the intruder was a neighbor; however, authorities indicated the suspect’s name will be released following an autopsy set for Friday.
