Two brothers have been arrested in Lincoln, Nebraska, after being accused of sexually abused a 10-year-old girl.
Rafael and Felipe Mora appeared in court via video link on Sept. 22.
Dan Packard, the Deputy Lancaster County Attorney, said Rafael, 22, was accused of having abused the girl from Jun. 1 to Sept. 19, while Felipe, 32, allegedly began assaulting her as early as Dec. 30, 2011, the Lincoln Journal Star reported.
Both men face charges of sexual assault of a child in the first and third degrees.
The abuse was uncovered when Rafael’s girlfriend caught him kissing and touching the 10-year-old girl inappropriately, according to an affidavit cited by the Lincoln Journal Star. She subsequently alerted the police.
The victim told officers that both brothers had abused her. Felipe had allegedly done so on a weekly basis, threatening to harm the girl and her mother if they did not keep quiet about the abuse.
Police detained Rafael and Felipe Mora in the early morning of Sept. 20.
At the hearing on Sept. 22, the men said through a Spanish interpreter that they are unable to hire a lawyer and requested a public defender be appointed.
Lincoln Police Investigator Troy Cockle alleged that Rafael assaulted the girl three times, the Grand Island Independent reported.
Neither brother is a citizen of the United States, but their current status remains unconfirmed.
Both brothers are being held on bonds of $1 million. If found guilty, they could face between 20 years and life imprisonment.
