State run television in Cuba reported that former Cuban leader Fidel Castro passed away yesterday at the age of 90.
Mr. Castro had been in declining health for several years and had stepped aside in 2006.
When he fell ill and was hospitalized with diverse colitis in 2006 is when he gave up power. He had turned over power to his younger brother Raul in a couple years later formally resigned as president.
Other than Queen Elizabeth he had held power longer than any other living national leader.
He had taken over power in 1959 with the overthrow of Fulgencio Batista.
Some reports say that he was born August 13, 1926 and some reports say 1927.
There are reportedly mixed reactions among the Cuban community both here in the United States and in Cuba.
There was no immediate information on the services that will be conducted.
