Richard G. Elliott

Richard G. Elliott, 87, died May 21, 2017 in Santa Maria, CA. Richard was born in San Francisco on July 28, 1929 and grew up in Redwood City and Sacramento. Richard graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in civil engineering in 1951 and a master’s degree in 1952. Richard served in the US Navy during the Korean War and retired after reaching the rank of Captain (Reserve). Richard worked as an engineer at Caltrans, retiring in 1991 as deputy director for Caltrans Region 5 (San Luis Obispo), directing highway construction and maintenance from Big Sur to Santa Barbara. He lived in San Luis Obispo and Santa Maria with his wife Diane, who preceded him in death after 36 years of marriage in 1988 and his wife Sandra for the last 27 years. He enjoyed traveling with Sandra throughout the world after their retirement. He was an avid reader about history, including American , Californian and railroad history, and had a detailed knowledge of WWII. In addition to Sandra, Richard is survived by his brother, Robert Elliott, daughters, Catherine Elliott, Susan Smith, Karen Smith and Patricia Baer; grandchildren, Celeste, Cody, Emily and Madeline Smith; and stepchildren, Regina Smith, Marty Carlson and Lorreen Malone.
