FACEBOOK HOAX OF THE DAY

‘Dance with the Pope’ virus warning is just a hoax

FACEBOOK HOAX OF THE DAY

Warnings describing a virus that has been disguised as a video called ‘Dance with the Pope’ is spreading across the Internet since 2014.

According to the warning, “accepting” the video results in a complete format of your mobile phone. Most variants of the warning assert that the virus warning was “announced on the radio today”. Others variants change the word “pope” to “hillary” (which was popular during the 2016 presidential election.) Other variants of the hoax attach it to another hoax warning of a hacker called “Jessica Christopher Davies”.

Whilst this hoax is spreading in a number of different variants, this one below appears to among the most common –

Tell all contacts from your list not to accept a video called the “Dance of the Pope”. It is a virus that formats your mobile. Beware it is very dangerous. They announced it today on the radio. Fwd this msg to as many as you can!

FALSE

This warning – along with its different variants – appear all to be hoaxes. The Internet is littered with spoof virus hoaxes, a niche of online nonsense that has the dubious honour of being among the first types of hoaxes to fool the masses on the Internet. This specific version appears to merely be a continuation of this type of nonsense.

These rumours often attempt to gain credibility by asserting that the virus has been announced by the media or authorities, and in this instance the claim that it has been “on the radio” is used, but rather conveniently lacking the most important information – what radio station and when. Information that would be invaluable when trying to confirm the validity of the claims.

Ultimately this is just another baseless warning, detailing a virus that simply does not exist. We have been unable to find anyone who has actually been infected with a virus described in the message, just people who claim it happened to a “friend of a friend”, and the warning fails to describe what it means by “accepting a video” which in itself is a rather ambiguous phrase.

Of course you should be careful when downloading files or opening attachments on either your mobile or desktop, but spreading misleading and vague information like this warning is just counterproductive.

COYOTES WANDERING SAN FRANCISCO

While families’ cats and dogs are enjoying the upside of spending days with their owners working from home during the coronavirus shutdown, COYOTES WANDERING SAN FRANCISCO are reportedly also taking advantage of the benefits of a suddenly empty city.

There have been several recent fake stories circulating about unusual wildlife showing up in cities during the global pandemic, including news from Italy of dolphins swimming in the historic canals of Venice and a gang of happy drunk elephants in the Yunnan province of China that was also debunked. A surge in coyotes wandering the streets of San Francisco is a little less far-fetched.

There has been an increase in coyotes in the city over recent years. In February KQED reported that they were thought to be recolonizing the places they used to inhabit abundantly after being nearly wiped out through poisoning and hunting from the ’40s onwards. After years of zero sightings in San Francisco, a coyote was seen in the Presidio in 2002, thought to have been brought over from a trapper in the North Bay or possibly even making its way alone over the Golden Gate Bridge. Since then numbers have continued to rise.

As San Franciscans get through their second week of sheltering in place, coyotes are seemingly enjoying the newfound space on the street.

DAWG SAYS: YEARS AGO THERE WAS A GROUP OF HOOKERS DEMANDING RIGHTS IN SAN FRANCISCO, IT WAS CALLED C.O.Y.O.T.E. (CALL OFF YOUR OLD TIRED ETHICS). MAYBE A BIT OF RETRO HERE OR AT LEAST SOME SYMBOLISM OF THE LIFE AND TIMES THESE DAYS.

OFFICER-HOMELESS LADY AND PIZZA

A kind-hearted police officer in North Carolina was spotted selflessly taking a moment out of his day to share lunch with a homeless woman.

OFFICER-HOMELESS LADY AND PIZZA

Officer Michael Rivers of the Goldsboro Police Department in North Carolina was on duty when he came across a homeless lady he hadn’t seen before, despite working as a cop for nearly a decade.

The officer said the woman’s shirt, which read ‘HOMELESS. THE FASTEST WAY TO BECOMING A NOBODY,’ was what initially caught his eye as he drove by her.

He had his windows down, so the two made eye contact and acknowledged each other with a simple, “hey,” and then he drove off. But something kept tugging at him to go back.

Rivers told CNN:

“God put it on my heart to get her lunch. So I turned around, and I asked her, ‘Hey, did you eat today?’ And she said, ‘No.'”

He then went and bought some pepperoni and cheese pizzas and returned to sit down with the woman by the side of the road, who identified herself as Michelle.

As the two were chatting, the moment was caught on camera by passer-b, Cassie Lea Parker, whose husband Chris Barnes subsequently shared the photo on social media.

Chris wrote:

“Cassie was out on her lunch break and observed Goldsboro’s Finest enjoying lunch with a homeless person.”

“Law enforcement does so much for our community, with a lot of it going unnoticed. We see you, Goldsboro P.D. Keep up the good work.”

Rivers was indeed doing good work as he spoke to the woman at length and discovered that she has a 12-year-old daughter battling liver disease and in foster care, as well as a 23-year-old son.

Her husband, also homeless, stood across the street while the two ate and talked.

Rivers felt that both police officers and the homeless are perhaps closer in their perceptions of the world than most think.

The homeless, he said, are often shunned by society, and criticized for bringing the situation on themselves.

Rivers said:

‘Homeless people are just people who are down on their luck. It can happen to anybody.”

He also felt that cops were viewed negatively, simply focusing on the ‘bad apple.’

He added:

“I come to work and my method is, ‘Who can I bless today? Who can I make smile?’ I’m not the one that wants to take somebody’s father or mother and put them in jail.”

The photo of Rivers and the homeless woman has also caught the attention of Rivers’ senior Police Chief, Michael West, who congratulated his charge on his humanitarian approach to the beat.

West told CNN:

“The circumstances around our job are often an unpleasant call to service, but this picture just shows we’re human like anyone else, and any chance we get to serve the community and help people, we take that chance.”

“I’m very fortunate to have Officer Rivers in our department.”

DAWG SAYS: THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH OFFICERS WILLING TO DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS…….
