San Francisco providing alcohol, drugs to homeless in hotels

DIPSHIDIOTS OF THE DAY: THE PITY BY THE BAY

The city confirmed on social media first and then in a news conference that providing alcohol and other addictive substances is a way to help protect those homeless now being housed in hotels and the general public.

“With regard to supporting people who are at risk, or who need to be in quarantine or isolation because they’re COVID positive, our focus needs to be on supporting them,” said Dr. Grant Colfax from San Francisco’s Department of Public Health.

“Meeting them where they are so that they can be cared for in the most appropriate way. In the way that’s good for them and for our community.”

The health department confirmed that about 10% of their quarantine guests have received tobacco products.

11 guests have received medically appropriate amounts of alcohol to prevent alcohol withdrawal.

The city confirmed on social media that they are providing those substance for free.

Health officials said the practice isn’t unique, and that it’s not paid for with tax dollars.

A person on Twitter started a firestorm when he said he was upset that drugs and alcohol are provided for free to homeless addicts.

The mayor has said housing those with mental illness and substance abuse issues complicates the effort to shelter the city’s homeless in hotels.

The city’s health department said harm reduction strategies are scientifically proven to be more effective than trying to force people to go cold turkey.

“Our philosophy in terms of treating those who suffer from addiction, substance use disorders is really again focused on science and the medical literature,” said Dr. Colfax.

The department said staff has received deliveries for medical cannabis for those with prescriptions paid for by the guests or in whatever way they would ordinarily pay for that cannabis.

  1. There are tax dollars going into those items where the patient would be in worse shape without. An alcoholic without the booze would very soon die from withdrawl if on the street. When the city forces(?) the homeless (Unhoused in Oakland) into the hotel space, the city takes on some responsibility in maintenance. There are private organizations doing what they can in supplying items that the gov’t should not be dealing in.

  2. I think this is exciting! Individuals have an opportunity to get connected to recovery for the first time. San Francisco is unique and beats to their own drum anyway. It’s happening! Let them try it, collect data for analysis and adjust or create new programs. These individuals are sick and can’t just Kick drugs because there is a Global Pandemic. Sounds like these people are in a safe secure environment. This helps them avoid running all over the streets engaging in crime like theft and prostitution while adding to the Covid crisis by overcrowding hospitals or dying on the streets. I hear people are drinking and using drugs at home with their stimulus anyway. What’s the difference?

“this period in our care has allowed some people to connect for the first time with addiction treatment and harm reduction therapy,” SFDPH said in a statement, according to SFGate.

      I hope you are right.

  3. Furthermore, I like to see the changes and agendas that Gavin Newsom and other Democratic leaders are using this time to push their agendas. Helping homeless, assisting those less fortunate. Trying to distribute assistance evenly to all impacted by the Covid.
Other leaders seem to be pushing agendas that seem to exclude people. Clamping down on immigration, punishing people married to immigrants and tighter border and citezenship regulations. That’s just my opinion. I’m nobody.

watcha gotta say?
