Kids Think Spider-bite Will Give Them Spider-Man Powers
Three boys, ages 12, 10 and 8, fascinated by Spider-Man, the comic book super hero, provoked a poisonous black widow spider into biting them.
On May 14, the three brothers came upon the spider while tending goats near Chayanta, a small town in the Andean region of Bolivia.
Believing the spider’s bite would give them powers akin to those of the fictional character, they poked it with a stick.
Annoying the normally timid arachnid into biting them.
Within minutes, they experienced localized pain that quickly led to profuse sweating, fever, tremors and muscle aches.
Their mother rushed them to a nearby clinic.
Their conditions did not improve and they were transferred to a hospital in Llallagua, where they were administered antivenom.
The three gradually improved during their six-day hospitalization until they were deemed well enough to release to their mother’s care on May 20.
