Trump is sending wildfire aid to California despite his public remarks

Despite recent sniping, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Friday he and President Donald Trump have a good working relationship,

As the federal government provides aid to fight California wildfires.

His remarks come a day after Trump threatened to withhold federal money because California isn’t doing enough to clear its forest floors.

“Remedy now, or no more Fed payments!” the Republican president tweeted.

Trump has been sending money as the state battles hundreds of lightning-sparked fires, Newsom said Friday,

The morning after he made his own public comments criticizing Trump at the Democratic National Convention.

He said he doesn’t want Californians to worry that aid may not materialize.

“There’s not phone call that I have made to the president where he hasn’t quickly responded,” the Democratic governor said.

“He may make statements publicly, but the working relationship privately is an effective one.”

Newsom spoke at a briefing with fire and emergency management officials and emergency responders as 12,000 firefighters battled blazes across the state,

Including two that are among the 10 worst in California history.

He said his administration has a memorandum of understanding to clear flammable vegetation in California forests.

“I am not convinced that the president was aware of that new memorandum of understanding,

That his administration signed with the state of California to collectively invest an unprecedented amount of resources,

To address the concern he highlighted,” Newsom said. “Had he been aware of that,

I’m not sure he would have made that statement, and I respect that the president has a lot on his plate.”

Since August 15, an area larger than the state of Rhode Island has burned in California,

Said Shana Jones, the CalFire unit chief for Sonoma, Lake and Napa counties.

Firefighters are making progress, but some communities are still threatened and under evacuation orders, she said.

“First responders have been stretched thin everywhere throughout the state.

They continue to work hard, and are getting little rest,” she said. “We’re not out of the woods.”

Southern California fires are largely under control, Newsom said, but fires in Northern California are straining the state’s resources.

Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Texas, Nevada, Idaho, Utah, Montana and other states are supporting California’s firefighting efforts.

Newsom said he’s asking Canada and states as far as the East Coast for additional help.

He has also requested a federal major disaster declaration.

Other nearby states are also battling fires, Newsom said, which limits the resources they can send to help California.

Fear of spreading COVID-19 has also been an issue as California seeks more firefighters, he said.

FACT CHECK: MICHELLE OBAMA SPEECH

Michelle Obama’s DNC address fact-checked by AP over ‘distorted’ immigration talking point

The Associated Press fact-checked Michelle Obama‘s Democratic National Convention speech,

After she condemned Trump for using “cages” to house migrant children at the U.S.-Mexico border,

While failing to note that the same facilities were used during her husband’s administration.

“Michelle Obama assailed President Donald Trump on Monday for ripping migrant children from their parents,

And throwing them into cages, picking up on a frequent and distorted point made widely by Democrats,” the AP reported.

“She’s right that Trump’s now-suspended policy at the U.S.-Mexico border separated thousands of children from their families in ways that had not been done before,”

“But what she did not say is that the very same ‘cages’ were built and used in her husband’s administration,

For the same purpose of holding migrant kids temporarily.”

AP FACT CHECKED HER CLAIMS ABOUT CAGES

The former first lady said Americans “watch in horror as children are torn from their families and thrown into cages.”

The AP noted that the “reference to cages is misleading and a matter that Democrats have persistently distorted”

And Obama’s speech included the same misleading talking points.

“Trump used facilities that were built during the Obama-Biden administration to house children at the border.”

Separated by sex and age,” AP fact-checkers wrote.

The AP then noted that photos famously circulated by Democrats “at the height of the controversy over Trump’s zero-tolerance policy at the border”

Were famously taken “in 2014 and depicted some of the thousands of unaccompanied children held by President Barack Obama.”

BB guns seen during virtual class sparks police visit

Courtney Lancaster, a Navy veteran and Baltimore mother, is outraged after she says police showed up at her home last week to investigate a complaint from her son’s school over BB guns that were seen during a virtual learning lesson

A Baltimore mother is outraged after she says police showed up at her home last week to investigate a complaint from her son’s school,

Over BB guns that were seen during a virtual learning lesson.

Courtney Lancaster, a Navy veteran, told a local Fox affiliate that her 11-year-old son,

A fifth-grader at Seneca Elementary School, is a Boy Scout who is trained in archery and firearm safety and owns several BB guns.

Ms. Lancaster said her son keeps his bow and BB guns displayed on a wall in his bedroom,

Which was apparently within view during a recent Google Meet class,

In which he had been enrolled since March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Ms. Lancaster said police officers showed up at her home on June 1 after someone had complained to her son’s school.

“I had no idea what to think.

I’ve never been in any legal trouble whatsoever. I’ve never had any negative encounter with law enforcement,” she told WBFF.

“I had no idea. I really didn’t know what to think.”

“So, I answered the door. The police officer was, he was very nice.

He explained to me that he was coming to address an issue with my son’s school,” she continued.

“And then explained to me that he was here to search for weapons, in my home.

And I consented to let him in. And then I, unfortunately, stood there and watched police officers enter my 11-year-old son’s bedroom.”

Ms. Lancaster said the police left after about 20 minutes and determined no further action was necessary.

According to emails Ms. Lancaster provided to WBFF,

A school administrator said a screenshot of the boy’s guns was taken during an online class.

The Seneca Elementary principal was then notified,

Then a school safety officer called the police because the “weapons” were apparently not “secured.”

“I felt violated as a parent, for my child, who’s standing there with police officers in his room,

Just to see the fear on his face,” Ms. Lancaster said.
