CALIFORNIA OFFICER FIRED AFTER 2nd SHOOTING
California cop fired fatally shot 2 Black men in one year including A young rapper
A California police officer has been fired after fatally shooting a Black man — but he was only canned because another officer was in his line of fire.
Ryan McMahon was terminated Wednesday, six months after his police chief in Vallejo, Calif., recommended his firing.
McMahon fatally shot two Black men during his time on the force, once in February 2018 and again in February 2019.
55 ROUNDS FIRED IN ONE SHOOTING
On Feb. 9, 2019, McMahon and five other officers fired 55 bullets at Willie McCoy, an aspiring 20-year-old rapper. McCoy had fallen asleep in his car at a Taco Bell drive-thru and was killed seconds after he woke up, body camera footage shows.
Police say McCoy had a gun in his lap at the time. Family members who viewed McCoy’s body said he was shot more than 20 times.
McMahon was fired after an internal investigation because another officer was in his “field of fire” when he shot at McCoy, the San Jose Mercury News reported. McMahon “violated department policies by engaging in unsafe conduct and neglect for basic firearm safety,” Vallejo police said in a press release.
FIRST SHOOTING WAS SIMPLY BECAUSE THE SUSPECT RAN
About 360 days earlier, McMahon shot and killed another Black man, Ronell Foster. McMahon said that he had stopped Foster for riding his bike without a light at night, according to local CBS affiliate KPIX. When Foster fled, McMahon chased him down and beat him with a flashlight. Foster took the flashlight and tried to run; McMahon responded by shooting him to death.
That internal investigation cleared McMahon, but the city of Vallejo paid Foster’s family $5.7 million in August 2020 to settle a wrongful-death lawsuit.
DAWG SAYS: 2 FATAL SHOOTINGS IN 12 MONTHS IS NOT AN ISSUE WITH ME AS POLICE OFFICERS THIS CAN HAPPEN.
BUT IT IS INTERESTING THAT THE FAMILY OF THE FIRST ONE WAS PAID A SIZEABLE AMOUNT DUE TO THE OFFICERS ACTIONS AND NO ACCOUNTABILITY BY THAT OFFICER.
