Razor blades in pizza dough; former employee suspected

A former employee of a pizza dough company was arrested on suspicion of inserting razor blades into packages of dough at a Maine supermarket.

The blades were discovered Tuesday by a customer who had bought Portland Pie Co. pizza dough at a supermarket in Saco, just south of Portland.

The store’s security video indicated several packages of dough had been tampered with by a man whom police identified as Nicholas R. Mitchell, 38. He was said to be a former employee of It’ll Be Pizza, which makes dough that is sold under several brands including Portland Pie.

Police had asked for the public’s help in locating Mitchell. He was arrested Sunday evening in Dover, N.H., 35 miles south of Saco.

Hannaford supermarkets on Sunday expanded its recall order for Portland Pie products. It now covers all the brand’s dough and cheese sold at any Hannaford store from Aug. 1 to Oct. 11. Customers are asked to return them for a refund.

No injuries or illnesses have been associated with the tampering.
