The firehouse was originally built in 1872 and it was the location of the state’s very first paid fire department. The firehouse was abandoned in 1921 for a larger facility and switched owners a handful of times over the years.
In 1959, the firehouse was purchased by Newton Cope. Cope gave a major facelift to the almost century-old building. He then converted it into a small bar and restaurant and it’s been thriving ever since.
The unique steakhouse has attracted all sorts of fascinating people to Old Sacramento including politicians, diplomats, sports stars, celebrities, tourists, etc. When Ronald Reagan was governer he even held his inaugural dinners here at The Firehouse.
