Friends should have each other’s backs and look out for them. However, one relationship turned deadly in Russia’s Samara region after a father found explicit videos of his friend abusing his daughter. After people found the child abuser dead in an unmarked grave, though, it raised questions about just how he got there.

Vyacheslav Matrosov recently found evidence his friend Oleg Sviridov sexually assaulted his six-year-old daughter. The two men allegedly got into a fight over the incident, and Sviridov was found in a grave days later. While only those two men will ever truly know what happened in the woods that day, investigators decided Matrosov forced his friend to dig his own grave, but Sviridov killed himself during or after the altercation.

Authorities originally held Matrosov on suspicion of murder, but local villagers shared their dissatisfaction with the charge. Rather than condemning Matrosov for any wrongdoing, they celebrated his saving the community from a despicable criminal. In the end, the court only found Matrosov guilty of “enticing” the alleged pedophile “to suicide,” granting him 18 months in prison.
